Now what's the point?

FIA calls Renault to face cheating charges

T
he FIA today confirmed that Renault has been requested to appear before an extraordinary meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council on Monday 21st September.

In a statement issued this afternoon by the sport’s governing body, the team has been called to answer charges, including a breach of Article 151c of the International Sporting Code. That particular rule regards bringing the sport into disrepute via “any fraudulent conduct or any act prejudicial to the interests of any competition or to the interests of motorsport generally.”

“The team conspired with its driver, Nelson Piquet Jr, to cause a deliberate crash at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix with the aim of causing the deployment of the safety car to the advantage of its other driver, Fernando Alonso,” reads the statement.

The FIA can go on a witchhunt to find Renault guilty of this cheating case. They can punish Renault all they like by getting them to leave the sport (which is actually doing themselves a great disservice)...

But what's the point? As much as I'd like to see Renault being punished if they're guilty...what can the rest stand to gain? Cheating will still go on in F1...

And Massa already lost his world championship thanks to that incident. So yea. It won't change the result even if Renault has been found guilty and punished.

Just my two cents worth.
