Inside Homeostasis

(continued from previous post)
When a danger finally passes or the perceived threat is over, your brain initiates a reverse course of action that releases a different bevy of biochemicals throughout your body. Attempting to bring you back into balance, your brain seeks the holy grail of "homeostasis," that elusive state of metabolic equilibrium between the stimulating and the tranquilizing chemical forces in your body.

If either the one of the stimulating or tranquilizing chemical forces dominates the other without relief, then you will experience an on-going state of internal imbalance. This condition is known as stress. And it can have serious consequences for your brain cells.

(t0 be continued)
How Your Brain Responds to Stress

Did you know that the emotional and physical responses you have to stress are set in motion by a series of chemical releases and reactions?

Curious to find out what is really going on inside your body?...

"Attack of the Adrenals" - A Metabolic Story

You are mugging to the wee hours of the night, way long past your usual bedtime. You then wake up late at 6.45am, and adding to that you have found out that you forgot to complete one of your very important homework assignments which your teacher has constantly reminded the class to do, fearing a few minutes of massive nagging from him (which of course seems like an eternity). You then proceed towards your bus stop but find that your bus is approaching. You make a run for it bus missed it. You wait there, looking your CASIO watch which shows 7.00am and it will take approximately 20 minutes for the next bus to come, and another 40 minutes to reach school which starts at 7.30am!! You reach school at 8am, well at least the prefects on duty have all left. Phew, you go to your classroom. Your teacher asks you why you are late, you do not know how to explain. He then asks you to hand up your assignment, the one which you forgot to do. After that 10 minutes of nagging and scolding accompanied with the laughter of all your peers around you. Meanwhile, you are beginning to feel a spectrum of emotions - Anger, stupidity, sadness, etc (anything but positive feelings). The story is just beginning.

You are about to enter the stress zone.

Inside your body the alert goes out.

"Attention all parasympathetic forces. Urgent. Adrenal gland missile silos mounted atop kidneys have just released chemical cortisol weapons of brain destruction. Mobilize all internal defenses. Launch immediate counter-calm hormones before hippocampus is hammered by cortisol."

Hormones rush to your adrenal glands to suppress the streaming cortisol on its way to your brain. Other hormones rush to your brain to round up all the remnants of cortisol missles that made it to your hippocampus. These hormones escort the cortisol remnants back to Kidneyland for a one-way ride on the Bladderhorn. You have now reached metabolic equilibrium, also known as homeostasis.

Schadenfreude
A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of others.

Its really sad that nowadays, people take pleasure in the sufferings of others.

Something so simple as making fun of a friend who has setbacks in his life can cause hurt on the latter's self pride.

Not just that, however it would sow the seeds for future Hitlers and Osamas whose so called humour is derived from schadenfreude...

In Matthew 24, in verse 37, Jesus prophesied that "as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days just before He returns." Well, how were things in the days of Noah?
"And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the Earth, & that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The Earth also was corrupt before God, & the Earth was filled with violence" (Genesis 6:5,11).

Behavioral scientists have concluded that one of the main culprits is TV!--By the time the average American child is 15 years old, he will have witnessed the violent destruction of more than 35,000 human beings on television, as well as 200,000 other brutal acts of violence!

Children's cartoons today also contain all kinds of sickening violence. Eclipsing "The Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles" and "The Simpsons", MTV's "Beavis and Butthead" has become a children's favorite. A far cry from the Disney cartoons of a generation ago, Beavis and Butthead routinely torture animals, set fire to furniture and engage in all kinds of abhorrent juvenile behavior.

Corrupted minds...I've really got nothing to say...because the change can only come from an individual himself...

Angel of My Life
Though star-blazed skies my mind contained,
The solitude of night my heart concealed,
Love's emotions were so fully restrained,
Thus did I hide behind a self-made shield.

And then you entered into my life,
Bewildering feelings, dazed and confused,
But you continued deeper like a knife,
Until my hardness was thus subdued.

I love you so much that words can't explain
this joy that I have for you.

You are on my mind day and night.
When we are apart I picture you gracious smile and gentle hug.

I can let my feelings out to you and not regret it
Because no matter what you are always on my side.

What I never thought possible for me,
You've done and that I'll always treasure,
My heart burns fervent with love for thee,
Our souls delight in each beyond all measure.

I thank God for sending me someone like you who is precious and loving.
Thus I can truly say that you are the Angel of My Life!

This poem is dedicated to someone(s) or something(s) or both...in fact after i wrote it i was lyk "wad the?! who on earth wrote this?!"

Well the strange way the brain works...you usually get into the writing poem mood when u feel a strong sense of emotions - joy, sadness, anger, etc...then after the poem is written and when your emo state subsides(i call it getting back to reality)...you wont have any idea who wrote the poem...

But anyway...time to study...

Hasta Lavista Baby...I'll be back...

9/11
So many people weep,
from this major tragedy.
so many people dead and injured,
and the have yet to find more deceased.

Everyone, everywhere,
looks around in disbelief,
No one can believe what happened,
All of the people pray for peace.

No one thought that this could happen,
at least never to us.
No one saw it coming,
and now that it did we are woken up.

Many people cry and mourn,
for the loved ones they have lost.
Many peoples hearts have been torn,
for the tragedy that was born.

Law of Diminishing returns

Quote from minyang's blog
"I wonder if the Law of Diminishing returns applies to relationships as well. Because frankly speaking, I think it does."

I think so too...
I can still recall some anonymous guy saying,"Keep going till you hit the spot and theres no going no further! Down Down all the way you go!"

Today has been one of the saddest days in my life...

Why? Thats for me to know and for you to find out...and only 3 know...me, myself and I...and a few others...

Your light source, when taken away from you, makes you mad...

I have just realised...the cause of all the anguishes in my life...i brought it all upon myself...After reading chowzy's blog, i realised that i've been making people my light sources...People who WILL fail me...and i dun blame them for they are just humans with feelings...

I guess I'll learn to make Jesus my light source...For he is the same yesterday, today, and forever...He is Love Everlasting...
